HISTORY OF RCCG

In July 1909, a son was born into the Akindayomi family of Ondo State of Nigeria. Even though this child grew up surrounded by idol worshippers, he knew there existed a greater power and yearned to know the God who created the earth and everyone on it. He joined the Cherubim and Seraphim church in 1931.

Whilst there, he began to hear a voice within him saying, “You will be my servant”. Since this was not his intention, he decided to ignore the voice. This went on for seven years during which all the business ventures that he tried resulted in failure. In debt and without peace of mind, he found himself totally dependent on the grace of God. This point marked the beginning of a definite relationship with God. Totally broken, he yielded saying, “Lord I will go wherever you want me to go”. He asked for signs to confirm that this was indeed God’s call. The confirmation came through the Bible passages of Jeremiah 1:4-10, Isaiah 41:10-13, and Romans 8:29-31.

In 1947, he started to worry that the Cherubim and Seraphim church was departing from the true word of God in some of its practices. By 1952, he felt totally persuaded to leave the church. He started a house fellowship called, the Glory of God fellowship at Willoughby Street, Ebute-Meta, Lagos. Initially there were nine members but before long the fellowship rapidly grew as the news of the miracles that occurred in their midst spread.  The Redeemed Christian Church of God was born in 1952, destined by the Lord Himself to take the world for Him. The church continued to meet at 9, Willoughby Street until they were able to acquire some land thereby witnessing a relocation to the present site of the Headquarters of the church at 1-5 Redemption way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos (formerly 1a, Cemetery Street).

Sometime in the early 70s, God spoke to Pa Akindayomi about his successor. The Lord told him that the man, who was not a member of the church then, would be an educated young man. Thus when a young University lecturer joined the church in 1973, Papa was able to recognize him in the spirit as the one that the Lord had spoken about in the past. This man, Enoch AdejareAdeboye who was then a lecturer of Mathematics at the University of Lagos soon became involved in the church. He became one of the interpreters translating Pa Akindayomi’s sermon from Yoruba to English. He was ordained a pastor in the church in 1975.

Pa Akindayomi was 71 years old when he died. Amidst controversy, Pastor Adeboye’sappointment was formalized by the reading of Pa Akindayomi’s sealed pronouncement after his burial. Since 1981, an open explosion began with the number of parishes growing in leaps and bounds. At the last count, there are at least about 2000 parishes of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Nigeria. On the international scene, the church is present in other African nations including C’oteD’ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Gambia, Cameroon, and South Africa. The Church is spread all over Europe, United States, and the Caribbean.

HISTORY OF RCCG-REHOBOTH CITY (The Journey so far...)

“For the Lord GOD will help me, therefore shall I not be confounded; therefore have I set my face like a Flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”- Isaiah 50:7.

Revival. Restoration. Rest. The essence of these words have hitherto been fleeting in the city of Flint. However, in the “room of prayer,” on 5th January, 2015, God unfolded his mandate to his servant, Pastor Mayowa Isaac Afolabi. God instructed him to neither go to the Midland nor down to Mexico City but to fulfil a divine agenda in the ruins of a once-upon-a-time-vibrant Flint. “The vision was to cause revival, restoration and rest in the heart of the people” the Pastor said with an unflinching assuredness. So, Rehoboth Chapel of the Redeemed Christian Church of God was born to bring the very things the city of Flint desperately needed – Revival, Restoration and Rest.

In the face of the great economic depression in Flint, friends and well-wishers began to advice against starting an assembly in the city because no one believed it could be done. However, the pastor said “if God is the one sending us, then he will back us up!” Against all odds, on the 18th January, 2015, RCCG Rehoboth Chapel had its first service with a total of 13 members (Seven men, three women and three children) at 2709, Coruna Road, Flint.  Some of the pioneer members included Dr. Maureen, Bro. Tobi Adebisi, Bro. Olu Adejuwon among others. As the Church grew from its humble beginnings, the assembly moved to another place in Pasadena Avenue before it again moved to its current location at North Ballenger Highway.

Within a year of the Holy Ghost-inspired outreach, the church has risen to about 50 members. The impact of the church especially in the midst of the Flint Water Crisis has also been aired on the local television in Flint. The church has been able to distribute about 10,000 bottles of water all around the city in its community outreach while also distributing Christian materials and preaching the good news of Jesus to the people of the city. Rehoboth Chapel was also a part of the Flint Benefit Concert which hosted gospel artist, Sammie Okposo. Within the first year of the church’s existence, several souls have been won to Christ; the members have experienced financial breakthroughs with many of the church’s student-population purchasing their own cars debt-free, and miracle babies have been born to the church. According to the Pastor, “God is moving in the city of Flint and we strongly believe the city of Flint is bouncing back. The good news is spreading and people are beginning to embrace Christ” the pastor reiterated. A member of the church, Dr. Maureen said, “We have seen people get closer to God in this church especially in prayer.”

The Pastor said, “In the next one year, I see the church in its own building and God expanding his own church in the area of spiritual growth and in the areas of numerical attendance. We are trusting God that by this time next year, we would have tripled the attendance.”
